Proclamation at mercat cross
Man in black armband making an announcement to a group in front of R. Miller butcher's shop, with a mercat cross on the right. Possibly the proclamation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1952, although the weather looks very nice for February. But where is it?

I wondered about Fortrose but thought the alley was further up and narrower. Also, isn't the Fortrose mercat cross even more battered and worn than this one? I'll check it out over the weekend - I know I can be very unobservant... Miller on the butcher's shop made me think of Caithness.

You're right Garve, it is Fortrose. I had never noticed this alley before - it looks as if it goes into someone's garden.

This was indeed the proclamation of Queen Elizabeth. We were all marched up from school to attend. The wearer of the armband was the Provost, Dr. John Anderson. Alongside him to the left are Canon Dobson and Mr MacDowall, Town Clerk. The other council members are standing further left. I don't recgnise them all but they include Fred Fraser, Effie Sinclair and Mr Munro (auctioneer).
