American Gardens, Invergordon

A tinted postcard showing the American Gardens. These were part of the Castle Estate and were situated in the Beech Woods to the west of the town. These were cleared at some point and the land is now occupied by the golf course.

Remember the American gardens and yes you are correct some of them were taken over by the golf course, where the new houses are now around Gordon Terrace used to be a beaufiful Birch Wood, and all the area where golf course is now and the houses was commonly known as The Bull's Hill...down and to the west of the golf club there was a wood known as The Ringy Wood, you could access it via the railway tunnel.....does anyone else remember this?

Further to this, the railway tunnel was known as the Donkey Bridge, maybe someone else recalls this feature?

But why was it the donkey bridge? Were there any donkeys? Or is it a sort of diminuitve as in a donkey engine.

It still is the Donkey Bridge. Your idea about it meaning small or smaller is a good one as the bridge is narrow, about 3ft, and has a low headroom, about 5�ft. Yes, it's that small. But perhaps it has the name for another reason?

I believe it is just the name given to this type of bridge, a quick browse on internet mentions other Donkey bridges...
