The Chemist business occupied premises on south side of High Street, currently a music shop between Buchanan Newsagent and Taxi Office, in the 1950s.

When sweeties were on ration we used to go into Ogilvy's and buy tins of Ovaltine tablets and Horlick tablets.

Rosalie, Ovaltine and Horlicks were all the rage back then. I used to get mine at Legge's as they were closer for me....I am surprised there is nothing on the site about Slaters Bakery as it was quite the going concern....

Hello. I feel sure that this picture of Mr Ogilvy is how he was when I used to go into the Chemist during my time at Inverg - that was mid to late 1940s.
I well remember the Horlick's tablets I used to buy from the Chemist and as Harry says they were all the rage as were the teeth whitening sticks (especially with us RAF chaps) Rex

Hi Harry, I remember Slaters well. When I was young it was the Mcarthurs who owned it. They lived in Mr Ogilvie’s old house in Shore Road, Firthview. They sold it to Frankie Ross who was the baker and I worked there the summer of 1968-69. It closed a couple of years later. I remember Virginia Mcvittie and David Davidson on the vans - we would wake up in the school hols to fresh rolls from the van.

When we used to go on the tattie picking and planting the first stop was always Slaters bakehouse to get the soft rolls and butteries(think they have a posh name for them now). If the picking or planting was cancelled due to bad weather it would be a fight for the rolls etc when we went home.

The buildings occupied by Slaters bakery became a furniture shop under the ownwership of Fraser Ross who had previously been a wholesale fruit and vegetable merchant. The site has since been cleared for new housing.

Hi Harry. Slater’s was demolished and local authority shelter type housing is there now. Firthview was next door to Pretoria House where Madge and Mary Ross had the tea room, and The Anchorage where Mr and Mrs King lived was on the other side of Firthview and then Lena Macdonald and Tony Mitchell’s cottages as you head towards the Bonemill.

Hello. This is a wonderful picture of the Chemist - it is how I remember him. Is he still about or has he passed to the Chemist's shop above. One must remember he was a few years older than I was in those days. As I previously said I used to get Horlicks tablets from his shop, also teeth whitening sticks.
As far as I can remember he was always very pleasant whenever you went into his shop. He certainly knew his profession.
